For the umpteenth time, George looked at his watch and then at the front door. They were supposed to leave in less than ten minutes and Viktor hadn't even returned from training. Nor had he called to say he was late. George sighed, ran a hand over his face and went into the kitchen. Debated whether or not to get a drink to calm down. Decided against it, since alcohol generally didn't improve the situation—nor did it help in a fight. And a fight was clearly coming. If Viktor couldn't be bothered to show, George would just have to leave without him. It was Lee's birthday, after all, and a good reason to be on time. An 'almost Christmas birthday', his best friend regularly claimed. Almost being the key here.

George opened the fridge and was peering inside, hoping to find something to snack on, when he heard the front door open. Before he could stop himself, he said: "You're late."

"Yes, I know. I'm sorry." George could hear the exasperation even in the kitchen. He wasn't sure if Viktor really meant it. "Training took longer. I just need a shower and a change of clothes."

George bit his tongue. He could stomach being late. What he couldn't stomach was how strange their relationship had become. How they sometimes treated each other like almost strangers. When they had started going out, first thing they'd done whenever they had come home was fuck. Fuck each other against the front door, fuck on the kitchen table, fuck in the bathroom or on the bed. When had they last shared a deep kiss?

George slowly walked into the living room. He wouldn't say something now before going to the party. Not when they were in a hurry. He'd only spoil the evening.

Ron and Hermione watched little Rosie run through the garden on her little legs. Wrapped tightly into several layers of winter clothes and coats, she was completely entranced by the falling snowflakes and kept on giggling whenever she fell into the snow. Her cheeks matched her name and she was utterly happy.

"Have you thought about it some more?" Hermione asked and moved a bit closer against Ron.

"Are you sure this is what you want? You've just been promoted and said you wanted to advance a bit further."

Hermione shrugged. "I still do. But I can do that later, too. There's still time." She had thought it through to the last detail.

Ron looked down at his wife and hugged her to him. "'Mione, you know I'm in. A hundred percent. But I'm worried that you're making this decision based on your fear that you're not present enough in Rose's life. And you'd be wrong about that on so many accounts. We've discussed that."

Their conversation halted for a while when Hermione went to Rose and picked her out of the little snow hill she'd fallen into. After she'd showed her daughter how to make snowballs, she returned to Ron. "Maybe I am. Partly, I mean. There certainly is this desire to spend more time with her." Hermione smiled as Rose threw her snowball a couple of centimetres away from her. "But I also feel that this is the right moment. My career is working out great and I'm in a good position. Taking a break won't change that."

"So this is it?"

"If you want it as well," said Hermione. "If you're sure."

Ron beamed at Hermione and pulled her in for a kiss. "Another baby it is then!"

Hermione laughed and kissed him back. "I love you."
