George nervously hopped from one leg to the other. Fleur had told him she would be meeting Viktor for lunch; accidentally running into him here sounded like a better plan than surprising him after Quidditch try-outs. But when Viktor came out of the restaurant, he still looked less than pleased. "What are you doing here?"
"I could say it's just a coincidence, but... I want to talk."
Viktor bit his lip and looked at the ground. "What's there to talk about?"
"Can we take a walk? I'll talk and you'll listen and... Please?"
It took ages, but Viktor finally nodded.
******
Kids were playing in the park, using mud instead of snow to fight. The two of them gave them a wide berth.
George took a deep breath. "Okay, here it goes: I know it must have been hard for you to work in a league were being gay isn't something that's openly admitted or discussed. I understand your fear and hesitation. But it's different here. There are several openly gay players and they are accepted. Just ask my brothers." George looked at Viktor hopefully.
But Viktor didn't look convinced. "No offense, George, but your family isn't exactly standard. Two out of the six of you are gay – of course they'll say that the Quidditch world is accepting."
"But it is!" George wrung his hands, trying to sort his thoughts. He was sure people would accept Viktor – gay or not. Or was he really living in a bubble? Was he just seeing what he wanted to see?
Viktor stopped walking and put a hand on George's arm. "I'm sorry. I really am. I'm not a coward, but this is something I can't risk."
"Even if risking it would make you happy?"
Viktor just turned around. A second later, he had Disapparated.

One year later, Viktor found himself standing in front of the Wizard Wheezes. Looking through the window, he spotted George working hard to please the desperate late-night shoppers looking to buy some presents. The store was packed, the shelves rather empty – it looked like business was going well. Not wanting to interrupt business, Viktor turned around to leave. Suddenly, he heard the shop door open. The scent of pine, fresh wooden shelves and candy wafted by.
"Viktor." He turned around and found George looking at him with an unreadable expression.
"Hey." He cleared his throat. "I hope I'm not intruding."
