Ginny looked at the tightly wrapped cake in her hands and forced herself to smile. "Thank you, that really is… Thank you, Aunt Muriel."
Aunt Muriel looked at her with a frown—Ginny recognised it as Muriel's friendly expression—and pressed a note into her hand. "It's my secret recipe for the fruit cake. A great fruit cake is a great way to show men you're marriage material. But don't you give that out to anyone, you hear me?"
Ginny kept the forced smile going strong and thanked Muriel again. She had long ago learned that telling her relatives that she had no interest in finding a husband lead to nothing but arguments. After promising that she would absolutely learn how to make the cake, she managed to extract herself from Muriel.
"Muriel trying to set you up again?" Charlie handed her a bottle of beer.
"Fruitcake recipe. Apparently I'm not appealing enough to potential husbands," Ginny said and rolled her eyes.
Charlie snorted. "Why are you putting up with it?"
"Because saying that I'm rather happy being single and being able to fuck who I want is not something that goes over too well with her."
"Oh yes. Nor does saying that I don't need to get married to be able to live happily ever after Kingsley. But you're right—that conversation never goes over too well." They clinked their bottles in mutual understanding and both hoped that the pre-Christmas party with the extended family would be over soon.
