Snape walked back behind the counter and put down the cookies. When Harry made a move to follow him, Snape stopped him with a look. "Customers stay on that side."

"Oh. Yes. Of course." Harry awkwardly leaned against the counter, then straightened up again when Snape wouldn't stop giving him the eye.

"What did you want to know?"

"Well…" Harry suddenly found he had forgotten everything he had planned to ask Snape.

"Yes?"

"Why did you open a bookshop?"

"That is the reason you came back here, Potter?"

It wasn't, of course. Actually, Harry hadn't really thought about why he wanted to come back so badly. In lieu of an answer, he shrugged.

"Fine. I opened a bookshop because I wanted a change, if you must know."

"A fresh start, then?"

"If you so will." Snape took out a ledger and started leafing through it. "Is that it, then?"

"Are you enjoying it?"

Snape didn't look up. "Enjoying what?"

"Your job."

"Yes."

Harry sighed. He should have known Snape would be as impenetrable as a thickly frozen lake.

When a customer came up to the counter, Snape said, "Hop along now, Potter." Harry swore to himself he would be back.
