Harry decided to go with gingerbread as a peace offering. After all, bringing food at already worked once—why pick something different? Once again, he slipped in behind another customer. This time, however, he was ready when Snape loomed over him.
"Gingerbread!"
Snape sniffed. "Homemade?"
"Yes."
Snape took the offered box, walked back to the counter, and sat down on his stool. "What do you want now?"
Harry had planned this carefully. "I'm looking for a present for Hermione."
Snape actually looked up. He had apparently not expected that. He caught himself quickly, though, and went back to indifference. "I suggest a gift certificate."
Harry shook his head. It might have been what he had planned when he came here for the first time but a gift certificate was a quick affair. He'd be out of the shop before he could say Quidditch. "Too impersonal. I want something different."
That got a long-suffering sigh from Snape. "And what do you want?"
Harry pretended to think hard. "I'm not sure. Something special. Something she doesn't have yet. Maybe you could help me pick out the right book?"
Snape gave him a look, but got up nevertheless. "Fine. Let's make this quick."
