George leaned against the doorframe to the living room, listening to Viktor recount his travel experience to Fleur. He was looking for a way into the conversation, but couldn't think of anything intelligent to say. The feeling made him even more nervous – he usually didn't think all that much about what to say.
When he finally remembered a funny story, Viktor was saying goodbye Fleur.
"Wait!" George shouted. Viktor looked at him and George was very aware that everyone was watching him. But there was nothing for it. This was his shot. "Would you like like to get coffee sometime?"

George still couldn't believe that Viktor had actually agreed to meet him. Harry had high-fived him later on, but George still was afraid he might jinx this whole thing if he called it a date – even in his head. Even though it was one (he was wearing his nice jumper, after all).
Viktor was already sitting in the café when George arrived, perusing the long coffee menu.
"Hi," said George, hoping Viktor would give him a clue whether a hug or a handshake was in order. But Viktor stayed up and so George only gave an awkward wave. "Did you already order something?"
Viktor shook his head. "I find this selection confusing."
George looked at the menu – Viktor was right, there was way too much to choose from. "Do you want to go somewhere else?"
"No, let's stay put. The other shops are probably crowded – there are so many people out doing their Christmas shopping."
"Tell me about it. The shop's packed – though I really shouldn't complain."
"Don't you have to be there now?"
George shook his head. "Nah, I take breaks, too. But when I see all these people I'm glad my mom insists on homemade presents each year."

After having coffee, George suggested that they could go for a walk in the nearby park. They walked next to each other, hands almost touching, discussing George ideas for a homemade present. Viktor said he liked gingerbread houses and George filed that away for later. "Mom isn't keen on those. Maybe I can whip up some nice bath salts for her," George said, wondering how he could smoothly take Viktor's hand. Then he just went for it. When Viktor stiffened, he worriedly asked, "Is this okay?"
Viktor nodded hesitatingly, not looking at him. "Quidditch is… I'm not officially out. Yet."

When the third cracker exploded in his hands, George finally admitted he couldn't concentrate. Ron, who quickly came to help him extinguish the fire and apply yet another layer of healing ointment on George's hands, made one of his rare astute observations: "You're in love."
George couldn't stop the blush that made it onto his cheeks. "Maybe."
"About time," Ron said. "So it's going well with Viktor?"
"It's complicated. He's not out yet, said that it's complicated as a Quidditch player."
"Maybe in Bulgaria. The Chudley Cannons have two gay players."
"Still, we're taking it slow. We haven't even kissed."

George watched Ginny paint ice flowers on the shop's windows. It was past closing time and for the first time today the shop was quiet.
"When are you meeting Viktor?" Ginny asked him as he waved his wand to restock the shelves. Colourful toys and joke items started floating through the shop.
"Late – we're going for drinks at a pub."
"Doesn't sound all that romantic."
She was right – it certainly didn't. But George took what he got, even though it was hard to be patient when he wanted nothing more than pulling Viktor close and kissing him. "It'll be fine."
