Just a quick note:

I have a Trojan/Virus thing on my computer and I can barely do anything. Trying to find out what exactly is wrong and erase that thing from my harddrive, but I actually know shit about this stuff.

So, I will probably not be able to be in touch till I get to uni tomorrow.

Am extremely sad and angry (mainly at myself for downloading that bastard).

I'm far to be an expert but I had a trojan two days ago. I was lucky because I detected it soon and searched the net for solution. Someone suggested a system restore (start menu > all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore). You should set a time before you got the virus and run system restore. I don't know anything about viruses and things but worked perfectly for me. I hope it will help you as well.

Thanks, I did exactly that. I have Vista and that was really a help to sort out this mess. The trojan is gone, but most of my data is still there. Now I have to change all my passwords and install all my programs though. Meh.

You know, I use AVG, it's really good on preventing that kind of stuff and traping them. I technically have two viruses on my pc but they are locked off in AVG's virus prison quarantine, so I suffer none of their effects.

You might want to switch out your anti-virus program. Norton is the pits.

Right at the moment I still have McAfee's trial version (because that has been on the computer when it came from the factory - and now is on it again, since I formatted it back to factory settings), but I will switch back to Avira. Unfortunately Avira didn't recognise the trojan - but me getting it is totally my fault, because I was so stupid to allow it as an admin...

Anyway, I think I'll look into AVG - maybe I should get that instead of Avira. Thanks for the tip!

God, I hate McAfee. I once had a virus that destroyed my computer, I was lucky in that my hard drive just died and got replaced so when I reformated my pc I lost nothing. The tech guru for the dorm rec'd AVG to me and I've used it since.

I know that one of my brothers uses Avira, but I've used AVG for five plus years now. It updates daily, scans your pc daily. You set the times. The pro version gives you a lot more room to manage things but the free version is what I've always used and it works perfect.

In it, there's an anti-virus, anti-spyware, e-mail scanner, and a resident shield which is basically a firewall. I have the latest version 8.0. Like I said, it's awesome. I've had only a few problems with it and that's my fault for being ignorant.

I have XP but I hadn't need to reinstall my programs. All remained intact. *confused* (Changing the password is a good idea, better safe than sorry.)

If I had made a safety copy of my Windows once in a while I wouldn't have had to, either, but I didn't and had to put it back to how it was when I first got it. But that's fine, I have most programs again.
